Emma M.

Fertility is a complex subject area as there are so many aspects to consider, some may struggle to conceive in the first place, others may be struggling with recurrent miscarriages, whilst others may be pursuing IVF to conceive. For many, the process can be very frustrating and emotional.

My own fertility issues introduced me to acupuncture after being diagnosed with endometriosis and having a series of heartbreaking miscarriages. It helped me to recover my health & supported me through two successful pregnancies despite having hyperemesis gravidarum with my second child & severe post natal anxiety.

My aim is to support you in your fertility journey, to support your choices and wishes & to maximise your ability to conceive through balancing the bodies natural cycles, all whilst nurturing your sense of well being throughout your experience.

Initially, we look at your menstrual cycle to address any imbalances and irregularities. A useful way to do this is through analysing BBT charts as this allows us  to monitor changes and progress within the different phases of the cycle.

In order to get the best results, the fertility service I provide often involves a combination of acupuncture, bio-resonance therapy and nutritional advice.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is beneficial to help prepare your body for conception - both assisted conception & natural conception. Many people choose acupuncture because they would like to avoid assisted conception, some because they have heard it is a beneficial support during assisted conception, and others because they have tried everything else and want to fully explore all the options that may help them to conceive.

Wherever you are in your fertility journey, acupuncture may be an excellent way to help to bring you into better balance.

A calm emotional state is very important for healthy conception. Trying to conceive may be fraught with many conflicting emotions ranging through hope, frustration, anger, guilt, sadness, grief not to mention fear... a veritable rollercoaster.

Balance is the key word. The constant emotional switching can be very disruptive to hormonal feedback loops. By allowing your body to relax during your treatment, you may aid the endocrine function to bring your hormones into better function.

It is vitally important to recognise the role that stress has to play in the conception process and how you can benefit from acupuncture during pre-conception.

When we experience stress, our reproductive hormones, amongst other things, can shut down. Stress over a sustained period of time can have significant impact on our sexual function and our fertility.

When we experience stress, our reproductive hormones, amongst other things, can shut down. Stress over a sustained period of time can have significant impact on our sexual function and our fertility.

When cortisol levels remain too elevated this may develop into sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, fatigue, digestive problems, tension headaches and may easily manifest as gynaecological dysfunction.

Recent well published research has suggested that women who received acupuncture pre and post embryo transfer significantly increased their success rates. This may be to do with the effect that acupuncture has to relieve stress, aiding the body's positive hormone balances and potentially improving the receptivity for implantation.

Stress can also be an important factor in male fertility issues.

  • “Unexplained infertility”

  • Pre-conception care

  • Assisted/IVF conception support

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Endometriosis

  • Ovulation issues

  • Menstrual cycle irregularities

  • Recurrent miscarriage

40% of fertility issues are due to male infertility such as:

  • Low sperm count

  • Issues with sperm morphology

  • Issues with sperm motility

Research has shown that acupuncture can influence health by:

  • Acupuncture has been shown to affect hormone levels by promoting the release of beta-endorphin in the brain, which affects the release of gonadotrophin releasing hormone by the hypothalamus, follicle stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland, and oestrogen and progesterone levels from the ovary.

  • Increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs - stress also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which causes constriction of ovarian arteries. Acupuncture inhibits this sympathetic activity, improving blood flow to the ovaries enhancing the environment in which ovarian follicles develop.

  • Increases blood flow to the uterus, improving the thickness of the endometrial lining and increasing the chances of embryo implantation.

  • Counteracting the effects of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) - PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility.

  • Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the number of ovarian cysts, stimulate ovulation, enhance blastocyst implantation and regulate the menstrual cycle in women with PCOS.

  • Lowering scrotal temperature.

  • by improving sperm maturation in the epididymis, increasing testosterone levels, and reducing liquid peroxidation of sperm.

Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This differentiates us from our western colleagues who practice Medical Acupuncture or Dry Needling. TCM has its own theories of understanding physiology & psychology and diagnosis & treatment are dependant upon these.

Acupuncture seeks to balance the menstrual cycle, reduce stress and thus cortisol and rebalance health in preparation for pregnancy.

Bio-resonance therapy has the ability to scan the body and detect areas of inflammation or stress within the body. It can also detect if there is a bacterial element causing a disturbance and treat it. This can be very useful in cases where test results have returned no answers to why you have not yet conceived or are having miscarriages. This can work very well alongside acupuncture treatments. Please call me to discuss this if you want to know more details.

Diet and lifestyle advice is also a regular part of acupuncture treatment, guiding you to the best sort of foods and exercise and rest that will improve your well being, according to your TCM constitutional diagnosis.

I supplement this with my additional nutritional training and may be able to suggest specific supplements or nutritional advice to assist you. Assessment of vitamin and mineral deficiencies is also included in the bio-resonance health assessment if you opt for this.

FEMALES: The menstrual cycle has 4 phases which require different treatment principles, therefore initially weekly treatments are recommended in order to regulate each different phase.  It should be expected to need weekly treatments for 3 full menstrual cycles (10-12 treatments) in order to rebalance the cycle and prepare your body for pregnancy.

MALES: Most of the male fertility issues relate to sperm production which has a 64 days cycle. Therefore 3 months of weekly/fortnightly treatments should be expected before any re-testing.

Everyone is unique and some may require longer and some less, if you have questions please speak to us for clarification.
